New Zealanders call slots pokies, and pokies are what most of the operators on this page are built around. What makes the market distinctive right now is not the games but the timing: a licensing regime for online casino gambling is being stood up on a published schedule, with an auction in September 2026 and operating restrictions from 1 December. A site that accepts New Zealand accounts today may or may not be part of that regime next year.

Two practical differences separate New Zealand from our other markets. The first is currency: NZD support is patchy, and plenty of internationally licensed operators settle in Australian or US dollars instead, so a New Zealand player pays a conversion spread on the deposit and again when the payout converts back. The second is that there is no domestic instant-bank rail here โ€” nothing that plays the part Interac plays in Canada or Trustly plays in Europe. That leaves cards and e-wallets, and only the wallets return money quickly: a Skrill or Neteller payout lands immediately after approval, while a card refund is two to five banking days behind it. Add the time zone. New Zealand is 11 to 13 hours ahead of the European offices most of these operators run their payments desk from, so a withdrawal requested on a Monday morning here is being reviewed by a team that starts work on Sunday evening their time. The published approval band is honest; the wall-clock wait is often a shift longer.

A licensing regime being built right now

New Zealand is the only market on Floath where the rules are changing on a published timetable this year. Under the Gambling Act 2003, remote interactive gambling could not be conducted from within New Zealand at all, with narrow carve-outs for TAB NZ and Lotto NZ. That left online casino play outside any domestic licensing framework: no local operator could be authorised to offer it, and no New Zealand body was set up to license or supervise the sites that did.

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 creates that framework for the first time, and the Department of Internal Affairs is implementing it. The design is deliberately small: up to 15 licences in total, each valid for up to three years with the possibility of renewal for a further five, and no single operator permitted to hold more than three.

  • Online casino gambling advertising is currently prohibited in New Zealand; licensed operators may advertise once approved, under rules still being finalised.
  • Operators without an approved licence are expected to stop offering online casino gambling here from 1 December 2026, with those awaiting a decision able to continue without advertising in the meantime.
  • The regime is built around harm prevention, consumer protection and age verification obligations placed on licence holders.
  • Land-based casinos remain licensed separately under the Gambling Act 2003, a regime the new Act does not replace. The Gambling Commission is the independent statutory body in that framework, hearing appeals against Department of Internal Affairs licensing decisions and dealing with casino licensing matters.

Age is one of the few places where New Zealand splits. The online casino regime is built around an 18 minimum, in line with the age for gaming machines, TAB NZ and Lotto NZ. Entry to the gambling floor of a land-based casino, by contrast, has long required 20 under the Gambling Act 2003. The figure shown on this page is the online one.
