Two bets worth making, one trap, and nothing to decide

Baccarat is the simplest table game in the lobby. You back Banker or Player, fixed drawing rules do the rest, and there is no decision to make once the bet is placed. Banker holds about 1.06% after the standard commission and Player about 1.24% — among the best prices in a casino — while the Tie bet the layout makes the most of is roughly 14% at its usual price.

Overview

How baccarat works online

Two hands are dealt, Banker and Player, and whichever finishes closer to a total of nine wins. Whether a third card is drawn is decided by a fixed table of rules that neither you nor the dealer can override. You are not playing a hand; you are choosing which of two hands to back before either exists.

That makes it the mirror image of blackjack, which it superficially resembles. Blackjack rewards correct play by up to two and a half percentage points; baccarat has no play to get right, so the only way to play it badly is to bet on the wrong thing. Against roulette it offers far fewer bets at much better prices — 1.06% against 2.70% — and at a similar pace in live formats. One decision, made once, before you ever sit down.

Choosing

What to look for in a casino for baccarat

The product details that decide whether an operator suits this category — and where a strong overall score can still be the wrong fit.

What to check before you sit down

  • Whether the tables run standard 5% commission or a no-commission variant, and what that variant does to a winning Banker six.
  • Which formats are on the floor. Squeeze, standard and speed tables are the same maths at very different paces — a speed table deals roughly twice the rounds per hour, which doubles how quickly the edge applies to your money.
  • The stake range. Baccarat is where high-limit tables cluster, and the distance between a £1 table and a £5,000 one is wider here than anywhere else in the lobby.
  • Bonus contribution, which for baccarat is usually 0%. It is the game most often excluded from wagering entirely, precisely because its edge is so low.
  • Whether the side bets can be ignored, and whether the interface keeps offering them between hands.

Online, baccarat is overwhelmingly a live game, so the operators worth looking at are the live-led ones. Some operators build the product around the live floor; others treat it as a shelf beside the slots. Both take one to three days to pay, which is the recurring trade in our set: the deepest live floors sit at operators whose cashiers are middling, while the fastest cashiers carry live tables as a secondary product.
