You are trying to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going past it. The dealer has no choices — the house plays a fixed rulebook printed on the table — while you decide whether to hit, stand, double or split with your own cards and the dealer's up-card visible. That asymmetry is why blackjack has the highest published return of any banked game, and why the figure always comes with a condition attached.

It reads like its neighbours and behaves nothing like them. Baccarat is also a two-hand card game and has no decisions at all: the drawing rules are fixed for both sides. Roulette has no decisions either, only bet selection. Poker has decisions but they are made against other players, with the house taking rake rather than an edge. Blackjack is the only game in the lobby where playing badly is measurably more expensive than playing well — typically one and a half to two and a half percentage points more expensive.
