Three different games share the word; only one is played against people

Poker in a casino lobby means three unrelated products: a peer-to-peer room where the house takes rake, banked table games such as Casino Hold'em and Three Card Poker that carry an ordinary house edge, and video poker, which is a machine with its whole paytable printed on the screen. Choosing an operator starts with working out which of the three you actually want.

Overview

How poker works online

In a poker room you play other players. The house deals, enforces the rules and takes a cut of each pot or an entry fee on each tournament, but it has no stake in who wins. In a banked poker game you play the house, which holds an edge built into the paytable exactly as it does at a blackjack table. Video poker is a third thing again: a random-number machine dealing five-card draw against a published schedule of payouts.

The word on a casino navigation bar most often leads to the banked games, not to a room. Rooms need player traffic to exist, and traffic is hard to build, so only a handful of operators run one. Against the rest of the lobby, poker's distinguishing feature is that a room is the only place in a casino where a player can hold a long-run advantage — held against other players, not against the house, and only after the rake has been cleared.

Choosing

What to look for in a casino for poker

The product details that decide whether an operator suits this category — and where a strong overall score can still be the wrong fit.

If you want an actual poker room

  • Traffic at the hours you play. An empty room is not a poker room, and the lobby shows seated player numbers before you deposit anything.
  • The rake structure and its cap, published in the help centre rather than discovered at the table.
  • Whether casino bonuses can be cleared at the tables at all. Poker play is usually ring-fenced from casino wagering, and casino play from poker rewards.
  • Whether the wallet is shared with the casino and sportsbook, since a split wallet means transfers and sometimes separate verification.
  • How the tables behave on a phone. Multi-tabling on mobile is where poker software either works or falls apart.

Rooms are rare in our set. Where rooms exist they usually sit alongside a sportsbook or a bingo product at long-established operators, and those sites are often slower to pay than slot-led rivals. That is the recurring shape of this category: the operators with a room are the older ones, and the newer operators with quick cashiers have not built one.

If you want video poker

Read the paytable, because it is the entire game. A full-pay Jacks or Better schedule returns about 99.5% with perfect play, and the same game with a shortened full-house and flush payout can be two to three percentage points lower while looking identical on the lobby tile. Perfect play means a strategy chart written for that exact paytable and applied on every hand; casual play typically gives up another one to two points on top of whatever the schedule already costs.
