Return to player (RTP) and volatility describe the same underlying maths from two directions. RTP is the average: the proportion of everything staked on a game that is returned to players, calculated across an enormous number of rounds. Volatility is the spread around that average — how returns are distributed between frequent small ones and rare large ones. Both are theoretical properties of the game as it is built. Neither is a schedule, and neither describes what will happen in a session.
What 96% RTP actually means
A 96% RTP means that over the run the figure is calculated on — typically tens or hundreds of millions of simulated rounds — the game returns 96% of total stakes to players collectively. The remaining 4% is the house edge. Applied to turnover, that is an expected cost of 4p for every £1 staked.

Two things follow. First, the figure is per unit staked, not per deposit: £50 recycled through twenty rounds is £1,000 of turnover, and the expected cost is calculated on the £1,000. Second, every line in that table is negative for the player. A higher RTP is a slower average loss, not a route to a profit, and no sequence of bets, stake pattern or session length converts a negative expectation into a positive one.
Volatility is the shape, not the size
Two slots can both be built to 96% RTP and feel nothing alike, because volatility decides how those returns arrive. A low-volatility game pays often and small. A high-volatility game pays rarely and, when it does, large. The long-run average is the same figure in both cases; the size of the swings on the way there is not.

Hit frequency is also not win frequency. On many slots a large share of hits return less than the stake — a £0.20 spin that pays £0.10 counts as a hit and is still a 50% loss on that spin. A game advertising a 35% hit frequency can produce a balance that falls steadily throughout.
A worked session
£50 at £0.20 a spin is 250 spins. On a high-volatility slot with an 18% hit frequency, roughly 205 of those spins return nothing at all, and the result is carried almost entirely by whether one feature triggers and how it lands. Finishing that session with under £25 is a completely ordinary outcome — not a cold game, not a faulty one, and not evidence that anything is due. The same £50 on a low-volatility title will usually last longer in spins and finish inside a narrower range, at the identical 4p per £1 expected cost.
The same title can ship at two different RTPs
Many slots are supplied in configurable RTP bands — versions at 96.5%, 94.5% and 92% with identical artwork and features are common — and the operator chooses which to run. The figure quoted in a review, or on the studio's own page, is not necessarily the figure in the client you are playing. Open the game's information panel or paytable and read the RTP there. A game that does not display its RTP at all is worth noticing, and in several regulated markets displaying it is required.
Feature buys and jackpots
A feature buy converts a long grind into a single high-variance purchase. Buy-in rounds often run at a slightly different RTP from base play — sometimes a little higher, sometimes lower — and the expectation stays negative either way, concentrated into far fewer and far larger bets. Progressive jackpots work in the opposite direction: a slice of every stake funds the prize pool, so base-game RTP is typically lower than a comparable non-jackpot slot, with the difference held in an outcome almost nobody reaches.
Using these numbers sensibly
- Read the RTP in the game's own info panel rather than from a third-party page — the operator may be running a lower configuration.
- Match volatility to how long you want a session to last, not to how much you would like to win.
- Treat "hot", "cold" and "due" indicators as decoration. Rounds are independent and nothing is owed.
- If you are clearing a bonus, check contribution weighting before RTP: an excluded game is worth zero towards the requirement whatever its RTP.
- Decide the amount before you start and set a deposit limit that enforces it. Money staked is spent, not invested.
